Ganges, Salt Spring Island, British Columbia
I have now spent over half a week wandering around being amazed by the beauty of the sea, mountains and spectacular forests of this island. It is wonderful but I do confess there are things that are a big part of life back home missing. Things like traffic lights, there aren’t any. Rush hour is nonexistent because nobody is in a hurry. Hitchhikers on the side of the road get picked up fairly quickly and from all appearances drivers are happy to do so. There are no jet planes flying overhead at any moment of the day but there are many boats plying the waters. There are fishing boats delivering the catch and sailboats with one or two people living a life aboard that I can only imagine. There are also boats used as school buses coming and going in the mornings and late afternoons. They pick up kids on other islands and get them back and forth to school. Many people use kayaks to get to the shops from waterfront homes like we use bicycles. The biggest change is the local paper, the Gulf Islands Driftwood reports news of interest to island residents first and foremost. I have read absolutely nothing about Trump, Brexit or ISIS since I arrived. That is not to say that I can’t get information by way of the TV, radio or the big dailies that are delivered from away, I’ve just found I don`t need to be up todate. Happily that type of news is not in the air around me like it is back home, bludgeoning me with every breath I take. A wonderful place is Salt Spring Island.
